Types of Fire detection systems

Conventional fire alarm systems

Conventional systems are one the simplest type of Grade A fire alarm systems, ideal for small buildings such as individual offices or retail shops, hmo’s and homes. They are typically available in two, four and eight zone panels, with each zone hardwired to a control panel or zone expander.

Conventional fire alarm controls are not able to identify the exact device that has activated but it can identify the zone (area) the device is in. When a more precise location is required it would be recommended to have an Addressable fire alarm installed.

Conventional fire alarm systems

Addressable fire alarm systems

Addressable alarm systems are more sophisticated than the more basic conventional type. Every device connected to the addressable system has its own unique address.  This means that when a fire is detected, the fire alarm control panel is able to tell you exactly which device has been activated enabling a quicker response to identify if there is a fire or it’s a false alarm.

Understanding the difference of an Addressable and a Conventional fire alarm:

Addressable  fire alarm systems act by receiving a signal which has been transmitted via single cable running through all installed detection devices.

Conventional systems use a separate wire for each zone for devices to connect to the fire system control panel

Addressable fire alarm systems

Wireless fire alarm systems

Wireless fire alarm systems have improved over the years and we are now excited to offer the option of a wireless / hybrid  fire alarm in our installation/ Maintenance portfolio. The benefits of a wireless / hybrid system:

  • Makes inaccessible areas accessible
  • Limited disturbance to the occupant and building or home
  • Link an outbuilding to the main building fire alarm
  • Protection of external temporary building such as marquees
  • Less down time as the installations take less time than a hard wired fire alarm
  • Heritage or listed buildings.

Fire alarms for HMO’s

It is a legal requirement for any registered HMO (house of multiple occupants) to have a working fire alarm.

With Alarm Maintenance Ltd knowledge and expertise we will be able to advise you on the grade of fire alarm that is required for your HMO based on the British Standards Recommendation. The type of fire alarm could be an addressable, conventional or mains interlinked system

Mains interlinked systems

Ideally your house should have an LD2 system . This will comprise smoke detectors fitted to the hall and landing and main living area. A Heat detector should be fitted in the kitchen. All of these devices are linked together either with a wire or wireless radio signal. Additional detectors may be fitted to other rooms and roof spaces as required for a more enhanced system.

The detectors are available with 9v battery back up or with a lithium battery which lasts the life of the detector- 10 Years. The lithium version is the preffed unit as it avoids that annoying bleep when the standard battery fails.

When multiple detectors are installed a separate remote control can be fitted to enable the alarm to be silenced and tested from one location.

Fire Alarm FAQ's

How often should a fire alarm system be serviced?

British Standard BS 5839, under which fire alarm systems must be compliant, suggests that fire alarms undergo inspection by a competent person at least every six months.

This recommendation is amplified for larger premises with multiple alarms and complex systems installed, with the suggestion of increasing to quarterly fire alarm servicing.

Can you service fire alarms that were installed by another company?

Yes, we service a wide range of fire alarms, regardless of who originally installed them. Get in touch to arrange a free survey and we can advise if the current system is up to the standard required for your location or business.
